Features & Benefits

WHAT MAKES GREENCRADLE'S BEDS & FURNISHINGS DIFFERENT?
1) OUR FURNITURE IS 100% SOLID WOOD
No particle board, plywood, MDF or any other composite wood products are used in any of our furnishings, including our cribs. Only 100% oak, ash, maple, walnut or cherry woods. No formaldehyde or other chemicals to worry about. Only solid wood, heirloom pieces.
2) OUR FURNITURE IS MADE IN THE USA
All our baby and children’s furniture are hand-made in the U.S. Most cribs today are manufactured in China and elsewhere in Asia, such as Vietnam, even when we are talking about brand-name US or European Companies. Products made in China and elsewhere in Asia are almost always not subject to third-party oversight, or government regulation, so they may not be up to our health and safety standards (i.e. using waste water to clean products). As we’ve also recently seen with the lead paint recalls, the chemicals and paints used in Asia may also may be far below U.S. safety standards. Recent recalls of cribs for safety reasons have also involved Chinese manufacturing defects. Even cribs made in Canada & Europe still use the same toxic compressed woods and harmful chemical/paint finishes all the same.
3. THE WOODS IN ALL OUR FURNISHINGS ARE SUSTAINABLY GROWN
The woods we use are sustainably grown and gathered from protected forests in the U.S. – so the materials are also environmentally friendly. It is popular these days for companies to advertise that a piece of furniture is eco-friendly, but that doesn’t make it healthy! Wood that is coated with toxic chemicals is not friendly to your child’s environment – and formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and other similar chemicals are hardly eco-friendly when they are disposed of and pollute our air and water.
4. NO TOXIC PAINTS, WAXES OR FINISHES
The only finishes we permit on any of our furniture are Tung oil – a tree oil that is extracted without use of any chemical solvents—or beeswax. No varythanes, polyurethanes, formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, lead-paint or any other toxic chemicals to worry about.
YOU ROOM IS MORE TOXIC THAN THE STREET OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW
EPA Studies have found indoor pollution levels to be up to ten times higher than outdoor pollution even in “the largest and most industrialized cities.”
• One of the greatest sources for indoor pollution identified by the EPA comes form “furniture made of pressed wood products.” The EPA warns that everyday furnishings represent one of the few sources of indoor air pollution that “release pollutants more or less continuously,” from the time they reach our homes.
• In fact, the EPA has concluded that even TOBACCO SMOKE poses a more intermittent risk to human health than home furnishings!
• New furniture carries with it the highest chemical pollution levels.

A Beautiful Room That Creates an Unhealthy Environment Is No Gift.

THE MOST TOXIC ITEM MAY BE THE BED
Pressed wood products, like particle board, MDF and plywood are amongst the most popular materials from which furnishings today are constructed, and are especially popular in kids furniture (as they are cheap).

• Beds, Night Stands, Tables, Chairs, Armoires, etc., all use these materials – high end furniture makers are included in this group.
• These products are still often referred to as “wood” or “wooden,” but are distinguishable from solid wood products, because they are really wood scraps that have been compressed together through the use of chemical adhesives, including formaldehyde, a volatile organic compound (VOC).
** [Note that the “organic” in volatile organic compounds is not the same one you’ve come to know as natural, but rather means a compound that is inherently toxic by its very nature.]
The EPA warns: “At room temperature, volatile organic compounds are emitted as gases from solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals (e.g., formaldehyde, benzene)...Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors.” Pressed wood products made for indoor use include:
• Particleboard (used in shelving, cabinetry & furniture)
• Hardwood plywood paneling (used on exterior of furniture and cabinets)
• MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard (used for drawer fronts, cabinets, and furniture tops).
*MDF “is generally recognized as being the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product.”
The chemicals used to create furnishings do not stay put – these chemicals continuously off-gas and are inhaled by us as we sit, play or sleep on them.
